I love my students. They are so open with their questions. Sometimes this leads to awkward moments. It has lead to me wondering how they thought a given question was even appropriate. Most of the time, they are not afraid to ask the thought provoking questions that adults are afraid to ask. Recently, one ofContinue reading “Please Ask: Demystifying Disability”

The Power of Support: My School District
When starting this blog, I knew that much of my writing was going to make me sound like I was constantly complaining about the state of disability rights. In some ways, this can’t be avoided. While we have come leaps and bounds in the past thirty years or so, every day something occurs to remindContinue reading “The Power of Support: My School District”
Idiots who take “those” medicines
I started this one out offending everyone, didn’t I? I heard this one back when Glenn Frey died. For those who don’t know who he was, he was a member of the Eagles who died of complications of Rheumatoid Disease. He died of pneumonia, and his body couldn’t fight it off. (Or that’s the storyContinue reading “Idiots who take “those” medicines”
The Forgotten Disabled: The Elderly
I have always felt that a person could be judged by how they treat those weaker than themselves. Much can be seen in a person’s moral character by observing how they treat small children, animals, and the disabled. As a society, we can be judged by how we take care of the forgotten group ofContinue reading “The Forgotten Disabled: The Elderly”
The Cost of War: Disabled Veterans
I’ve had the blessing of some amazing people in my family who have taught me lessons that they never knew they were teaching me. I can’t even start counting them. (Lessons or people. I have a HUGE family.) If I had to pick out the most important lesson my Uncle Bobby taught me, I’m notContinue reading “The Cost of War: Disabled Veterans”
The Strongest Man I Ever Knew
Religious views are my own. I think I’m going to take the subject away from RD for a minute, and tell you about the strongest man I ever knew. I want to talk about my Uncle Ricky. My Uncle Ricky was most certainly one of the goofiest men I ever met. He loved children. WeContinue reading “The Strongest Man I Ever Knew”
Disability in Higher Education
I’ve been dancing around this blog for awhile. I’m really trying to write something a bit more formal on the subject, but I’m having trouble getting my thoughts in order. We are pressured as teachers to push college as hard as we can. In a way, I can see why. It seems like any jobContinue reading “Disability in Higher Education”
What’s in your head?
I completely stole that title from the Cranberries song “Zombie”. I’ve been talking to mom via text about writing this blog, and now the song is stuck in my head. It works, though. I’ve been tackling issues dealing with physical disability and medical care for that for awhile now. I’ve been avoiding my mental disabilities.Continue reading “What’s in your head?”
What defines a marriage?
I recently read a book by John Walsh on the horrific murder of his little boy and how it has led to all of the laws we have in place today that protect our children. It’s a fascinating book, though heartbreaking and hard to read. I highly recommend it. Mr. Walsh makes a statement inContinue reading “What defines a marriage?”
Uncle James: It didn’t have to happen.
We lost my Uncle James on Friday. He died of COVID-19. He died of a preventable disease with a vaccine. He did have some underlying conditions, ones that he was living with and managing. It was getting COVID that killed him, though. Within a few days. The worst part is, he didn’t have to die.Continue reading “Uncle James: It didn’t have to happen.”
